State Auto Insurance
About State Auto Insurance
Our company was founded in Columbus in 1921 by Robert S. Pein, in a rented room at 257 E. Broad St. At that time, Pein (pronounced "Pine") believed that the insurance industry left much to be desired in terms of rates and claim handling. He established State Automobile Mutual Insurance Company to provide reasonable rates and prompt and reliable claims service to policyholders - a promise that the company has endeavored to keep ever since. Pein also relied upon independent insurance agents to assure the best and most efficient policyholder service, and we still rely solely upon independent agents to market our products today.
The company has grown rapidly since that time, now doing business in 34 states through more than 24,000 independent insurance agents. However, our pledge to providing financial stability, fast and fair claim service and competitive rates to all our customers remains. In 1991, State Auto formed a downstream holding company, State Auto Financial Corporation, which is publicly traded on NASDAQ under the symbol STFC.
Since taking over the helm of State Auto in 2006, current Chairman/CEO Bob Restrepo has provided firm leadership and direction that has led to several company acquisitions - including the Beacon Insurance Group (Texas), the Patrons Mutual Group of Connecticut and most recently the Rockhill Insurance Group (Missouri), expanding State Auto both geographically and business-wise. But the original promise by Bob Pein, from nearly 90 years ago, remains intact today. From the words of one of our popular themes, State Auto is a friend you can depend on, now and always.
What's noteworthy about State Auto:
- State Auto is probably best known in the Columbus community for our life-size Nativity display during Christmastime. Our love of the season goes back to founder Robert Pein, who began decorating the home office building with lavish Christmas displays in 1931. The Christmas display evolved over the years - from a rooftop Santa Town with thousands of lights and hundreds of Christmas trees - to the life-size Nativity which first graced the front of the building in the 1950s. The Nativity, too, has evolved over the years and now is situated in State Auto's Pein Park, just east of the building.
- The company has won design awards for its beautiful park, as well as the 184,000-sf addition, called the Pavilion, completed in 1990.
State Auto has over 2,300 employees, with regional centers located in Austin, TX, Columbus, OH, Indianapolis, IN, Nashville, TN and Baltimore, MD. The headquarters campus at 518 E. Broad houses over 600 employees.
