The Motorists Insurance Group
About Motorists Insurance Group
The Motorists Mutual Insurance Co. was founded on Nov. 19, 1928, with an initial investment of just $15,000 by businessman Carl Crispin and then Ohio Governor, Vic Donahey, who had a vision of offering low-premium automobile insurance with prompt, fair claims service. It's this simple philosophy that has grown Motorists Mutual into the company it is today - a strong, regional company that has reach across the Midwest and Northeast through its affiliations with other organizations in The Motorists Insurance Group.
The relationships we build with independent agents and policyholders are crucial to the success of our group of companies. Motorists Mutual is represented by more than 4,300 independent agents who live and work in local communities throughout a six-state area. Working as a team, we provide quality products, fair prices, prompt claims service and the respect of every associate.
Chairman, President and CEO John J. Bishop has enjoyed a 39-year career with Motorists and has received many industry awards for his dedication to the independent agency system. Since becoming CEO in 2001, the company has more than doubled in size. He continues to lead by example and keep the focus on what he feels matters most: people and relationships.
Motorists believes in strong community involvement and is dedicated to strengthening our communities, supporting organizations such as United Way, Mid-Ohio Foodbank, The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation, Future Possibilities, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and Dispatch Scholar Athlete Awards. Motorists also has been a proud sponsor of The Ohio State University and its athletic programs for more than 50 years.
In addition, the Motorists building in downtown Columbus overlooks the Topiary Park, one of the most unique parks in our great city. We're proud of our financial commitment and ongoing support of the park and its living artwork that serves as a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Motorists moved to its Home Office at 471 E. Broad St. in 1940 and has called it home ever since. In 1973, the company built and moved into a 21-story building at the same location. More than 700 associates are employed at the Home Office and more than 1,000 across the group.
The Motorists Insurance Group consists of 10 property and casualty insurance, life insurance and insurance brokerage companies. Motorists Mutual is the lead company in the group and writes business in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
